Wow - what a unit July 25, 2010 Jules Wow, what can I say. This may be a considered puchase and I read up a lot befoe deciding to buy this unit. I am so glad that I did, set up was simple. Got it DAB radio within 2 minutes of plugging in. Got wireless connection very quickly with no hassle. The connection to The Lounge was simple. I'm too lazy to read instructions and this definitely was very, very easy without having to wade through loads of instructions.
The quality of sound is excellent both via internet and DAB. I have had a couple of dab radios and they have always been a bit crackly. Not so with this one crystal clear clarity. This sound is fab from all imputs including my ipod.
Can't praise this unit enough - easy and sounds fab, fab, fab. Well worth every penny.
Pure Avanti -Pure magic July 2, 2010 Mr. M. Swain (Wolverhampton UK) I am very pleased with this beautifully designed radio. The sound is second to none and it looks good. Easy to set up.
good apart from the bugs! June 13, 2010 N. Smith (UK) Sound and streaming capabilities are generally good but the unit is let down by limited alarm functions (2 with basic settings unlike the cheaper Pure products who offer 4 more sophiscated alarm settings. Good display however too bright at night time on it's lowest setting, you can however switch the display off completly if required.
Problem however on occasion with the unit not responding to commands from either the remote or direct on the unit .
a mixed bag June 9, 2010 Mr. Paul R. Collins (Hemel Hempstead, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The unit Amazon shipped to me was obviously refurbished. Although it had been carefully resealed, I am not happy to pay full price for a product with a scratch on it's top panel and somebody elses' finger prints left all over the metal buttons.
Turning to the Avanti Flow itself, it really excels as both a DAB and an FM radio. Radio 4 news is clear at all volumes and Planet Rock can go loud without any distortion or even a trace of rattle. The inbuilt subwoofer is thankfully subtle in operation, adding to an already warm tone. It lacks ultimate hi-fi detail, but that is a mercy because it gives the Avanti a magical ability to smoothe the edges of low bitrate DAB.
Being a systems engineer by trade, I started out manually configuring the Avanti for my network, but it simply could not connect to the TwonkyMedia UPNP server built into my QNAP NAS box. The radio had however successfully connected to my WPA2 wi-fi network, and it downloaded a firmware update. With the new firmware, and accepting the default DHCP networking configuration, it connected to my UPNP server. Sadly however the Avanti still intermittently reported "server not responding" when using UPNP.
UPNP navigation through my extensive mp3 collection was laborious. Moving folder by folder, I tired of hitting the + button during the journey from "A-Ha" to "Zutons". Several times I attempted to use the seach function, but this appears to only work when you type a perfect match. Thus there is no chance of quickly getting near the artist "Paul Weller" just by typing "Well", and I struggled to remember the exact spelling of CDs I ripped years ago (e.g. did I put a . between Sgt and Pepper). Whereas a UPNP server is magically easy to use with the likes of Windows Media Player 11 running on a PC, it was just too hard with the Avanti.
Internet radio worked very well on the Avanti, once set up. Just as with DAB, the Avanti is very sympathetic to making the best of low bitrate streams, and high bitrate serious stations like BR-Klassik are excellent. The Avanti will however only play stations which you have pre-selected using "the Lounge" website. Whilst it this a very attractive looking website, it took me longer than I would expect to work out the interface.
After very careful consideration, I'm afraid my Avanti is going back to Amazon. The Avanti is a lovely DAB radio, but this is a premium product and it needs to be equally good with all it's features, including as a UPNP renderer.
Pure Avanti June 6, 2010 S. Ward (UK) A good product that has performed well thus far although not had it that long ( a couple of months ) i like all the functions on it and the software . Took a while to set it all up but once its done your away
It communicates well wirelessly , the sub is a nice touch as is the ipod dock
All in all a nice piece of kit reasonably priced
