Good, But Not Brillant March 11, 2010 Mr. B. Gibson (United Kindom) The Good
Its a pretty good price and the base packs quite a little punch for only 25 watts. The sound quality is really good and works well with the base. The remote is a nice little touch making me more lazy than i am already :).
The Bad
Comes in a pretty small box to what you would expect for 5.1. The matrix mode is pretty poor it simply makes the rear 2 speakers crackle some form of what your playing not really anything like 5.1. The cables are ridiculously tiny. I live in a tiny student accommodation and the rear speakers can only reach half way down my room. Theres no way you could place the speaks on different corners of the walls they just would't reach. The best bet would be to buy some of the extension cables separately sold on amazon for around 3.99. Because these speakers are not optical it means there are hundreds of small wires trailing all over your room and because the wires are so small you cant really hide them anywhere without having to place your speakers somewhere stupid. So you end up with wires trailing straight down the middle of your room. The cables you have are the, power cable, the remote cable 5 speaker to sub cables and 3 sub to computer cables. You should bare this in mind before you buy the speakers especially if you don't like seeing cables everywhere. I decided to send my speakers back and go for the logitech 2.1 Z 2-300 they are about £40 more but has less wires and are 3 times as powerful. I think they should defiantly be consider especially if you don't have a 5.1 surround card and just want to use the matrix mode its really not up to standard.
Outstanding for the price March 7, 2010 Harj I have a living room 15ft by 12ft and these speakers sound simply amazing. I've set the bass to around 40% and it sounds perfect. Highly recommended.
Good sound March 4, 2010 O. Salmon (UK) The sound coming out those speakers is really good.
I'm not sure if it's my sound card but I'm struggling to get the 5.1 works ... but I don't really need it!
Breathes new life into games! February 25, 2010 Mr. J. Crook (Kent, UK) I was going to buy the X-530's but thought for the extra bit of money may as well get these ones instead and i'm glad I did.
The speakers came well wrapped with nice colour coded cables that are a decent length(about 4 metres) The speakers themselves are quite heavy which is a sign of good quality. They look good and easy to install.
I have the subwoofer just under my desk to my left and the centre on my 23" LCD monitor, the 2 rear speakers I have on my chair ;)
Plugging them in was simple, all cables are colour coded. Speakers plug straight into the subwoofer by standard single Phono connections, then a 3x 3.5m jack cable runs from the subwoofer to your computer, 1 for centre and subwoofer, 1 for rear and 1 for front.
The remote(though not very remote as it has a cable) is really handy. Can just reach forward and change volume, bass, power and the matrix mode(will speak more of this further on)
I have put the rear speakers onto the back of my leather seat to make it into a kind of gamer chair(mostly cuz I cannot yet afford stands) and to be honest, this is far better than having stands, the speakers are right behind my head and give out really good sound.
Here are some games i've tried with it and how they sound:
Arma II: Fantastic! Walking through wooded areas and hearing the wind blow around you and then hearing church bells behind you in a town that you was recently in, really amazing!
World of Warcraft: Sounds good but not realy a game designed for 5.1 in my opinion, the bass however really helps despite the 5.1 placement in game not being the best but is a huge improvement
and does add to the immersion
Call of Juarez: Abosolutely incredible! Hearing bullets go flying past your ear is incredible and the bass from a group of horses riding past is impressive
Oblivion: Really adds to the atmosphere, actually makes some of the old ruins a little big eerie in a way as you can hear the wind blow from behind you and hearing twigs breaking in woods is quite amazing
Music: I've played a few CDs to try them out, music does sound good, nothing really amazing, its very clear and crisps but it lacks soul or as someone has said "presence" its hard to explain. It's not bad, I mean music sounds far better than you'd expect for £60 but its not amazing
Upmix using Matrix mode: As mentioned these speakers have a button called Matrix, what it does is it upmixes none 5.1 to 5.1 virtually. Essentially it doubles the stereo to the rear from what I can tell but does work nice for 2ch inputs, though I tend to use CMSS 3D on my X-Fi Platinum Champion soundcard as it does a better job in my opinion
Inputs: Talking of inputs, anything which either has a headphone socket on it or 2 phono sockets out will work straight out the box. Plug the green cable into your mp3 player to listen to your music or plug it into the adapter(3.5m input to red/white Phono input) and anything which has audio out by 2 phono such as V+HD box or a Playstation(if you send sound through the AV cable rather than through HDMI in the settings on PS3, or PS2 just run it straight through adapter) this is great as virtually anything can be run through it. Sadly these devices will only be 2ch and therefore using Matrix will be the only way to get close to running your PS3 in 5.1 with this kit, but hey, have you seen the price of an AV Receiver or Home Cinema system with Optical in/HDMI in?
Overal:
IF you don't wish to break the bank for a decent 5.1 solution then these are a great buy. These will be especially great for your PC however for even a cheap home cinema setup using Matrix mode you can still get a virtual 5.1 experience from stereo equipment. If you do have quite a large living room, get 5 phono extension leads(preferbly seperate or 3 pairs) so as to reach the cables round. The cables are quite lengthy and I think the average user will have no problem. Setting these speakers up was easy, took me longer trying to get the plastic off as i couldn't be bothered to reach for scissors. The sound is clear and crisp, the bass is very powerful but can be turned down to match the dialogue/neighbors quite easily. Only reason for loss of a star is because music does miss something that is hard to really describe until you listen to it, its not bad as I say but if your a music fan you may wish to save up for something else. If your a gamer and music isn't number 1 priority then you can't go wrong with these
epic speakers February 24, 2010 T. Stradling (england) Honestly the best £70 ive ever spent... the surround sound for my gaming is awesome, especially paired with my sound blaster audigy card and the bass is just amazing!! I can pretty safely say you wont find better speakers for the price.
The console adaptor is pretty cool too, i plug it into my ps3 for better sound and it works well with the matrix mode clicked. The one issue i do have with the matrix mode is every now and then the sound gets weirdly split up and makes sound kinda like a train on its tracks... For some reason to fix this you just have to turn the volume up really loud for a second and it sorta jumps back into action.
If u want 5.1 for music, gaming or film or pretty much any reason... buy these!! unless ur stinkin rich, then get some that i'll never be able to afford.
